Life-Saving Dogs Give Blood at Medivet 24 Hour Hendon

Medivet 24 Hour Hendon is calling on dog owners to donate vital blood supplies following a donor day held at the Practice.

The donor days are run by Medivet’s in-house blood donation service, VetBlood, a not-for-profit organisation which saves lives of seriously ill dogs by supplying blood products to veterinary practices throughout the country.

Medivet 24 Hour Hendon Lead Vet and Branch Partner Jerry Dunne said: “Just as we humans need blood for life-saving operations, seriously ill dogs also require blood transfusions to keep them alive in emergency situations. Canine blood supplies are not readily available which is why we are urging owners to consider the VetBlood service. It offers such a lifeline for a busy Emergency Hospital like Hendon.”

To maintain stocks, VetBlood relies on the support of Medivet clients and their dogs around the country. All participating dogs must pass a rigorous registration programme to ensure that they are fit and healthy to provide blood. In return, Medivet practices in the VetBlood donor programme offer free medical checks (including a blood test), a donor certificate and silver collar tag, a £25 voucher to spend with Medivet plus a discount voucher for pet food as well as a dog toy and treats.

Denise Turner, Veterinary Nurse and Manager of VetBlood for Medivet, said: “We want to encourage dog owners around the country to come forward and find out whether their dog may be a suitable candidate for blood donation. We hope that donor days like today will help to raise awareness of the importance of canine blood donation in London and, indeed, right across the country.”
