Yateley Vet Celebrates 20 years of Local Pet Care

Veterinary Surgeon and Medivet Yateley-Kynoch Vets Branch Partner Jonathan Spurgeon is celebrating 20 years with his local practice this winter.

Having learned the basics of the job in a mixed practice in Swaffham and Fakenham, Norfolk, he moved to Guildford after 2 and a half years to concentrate on small animal work. In 1999 he moved to Kynoch Vets in Yateley, Hampshire, where he has remained ever since - the last 2 and a half years as a Medivet practice.

“Things have changed a lot in the vet business in the last 20 years. Certainly, some medicine, technology and surgical techniques have almost changed beyond all recognition,” Jonathan said. “For instance, I now have a special interest in keyhole surgery, but when I started out human surgical procedures such as appendectomies and endoscopic gallbladder procedures were only just getting underway.”

Jonathan became a Partner in 2002, where he took on nurse tutoring within the practice. He has a General Practioner Certificate in both small animal practice and feline medicine, but his special interest is endoscopic and keyhole surgery. He has now been doing this for 12 years and has carried out an incredible 1,200 keyhole spays as well as nearly 600 endoscopic procedures.

“Looking to the future, I hope to lead the team here at the Medivet Yateley branch for the foreseeable and continue on the lifelong journey of being a good vet for my patients,” added Jonathan. “Having been with Medivet for just two and a half years, I’m thoroughly enjoying working within an organisation that’s as dedicated to animal welfare, medicine and surgery as we’ve always been at Kynoch Vets.”

Caring for others clearly runs in the family, as Jonathan’s wife of 17 years is a G.P. The couple have three daughters, ranging from 8-14. Outside of the veterinary world, Jonathan is a keen cyclist who has participated in world-renowned alpine events including the Maratona dles Dolomites and La Marmotte. He is also a keen runner (two marathons to date) and skier.

Dr Ciara Mc Cormack, Head Of Clinical Operations at Medivet, said: “‘It has been a pleasure working with Jonathan since Kynoch Vets joined us. His commitment to offering gold standard care and putting his patients and clients at the forefront of every decision he makes is an attribute that has inspired me and many others around him. Congratulations Jonathan on achieving 20 years of committed, excellent service to your clinics and our profession.”
