Your Pet's Holiday Checklist

The 21st June 2017 marked the first day of summer, and it’s around this time when we all start to jet off on our summer holidays – some of us may be taking our pets along with us, too!

Many of you will base your entire holiday choice on how suitable the destination is for your pets. If this is the case for you, you may be thinking about what you need to pack to ensure your pet’s summer holiday is as stress-free as it can be.

A pet travel checklist is very handy to ensure you don’t miss a thing (and to avoid last minute detours!), so here is a list of all the essential items you’ll need to take for a fun and relaxed holiday.

Before you go

There are a few things you’ll need to prepare ahead of your trip and it’s best to plan these things a few months in advance.

First, you’ll need veterinary confirmation to ensure your pet is healthy and safe to travel, so make sure you check with your local vet who will be able to confirm if your furry friend can actually travel with you.

Then your pet will need:

Vaccinations

If you are visiting the EU or a listed country, your pet will require a vaccination against rabies and you’ll need to wait 21 days from the date of the vaccination before travelling. Contact your local vet to find out what vaccinations your pet will need to keep them protected.

Pet passport

A pet passport is certification that identifies your pet and confirms that your vet verifies your pet is healthy. Visit the DEFRA website for up-to-date advice on pet travel regulations.

It is now a legal requirement for all dogs in England, Scotland and Wales to be microchipped and their details registered on one of the authorised databases, such as Petlog.

Pet insurance

Having a good pet insurance policy allows you to concentrate on what’s best for your pet, knowing help is there for the cost of unexpected treatment. Veterinary costs can quickly mount up and paying for emergency treatment in bulk can be a struggle, so take a look at the different types of pet insurance available.

Medication

If your pet is on any medication, make sure you have plenty available for the duration of your pet’s holiday.

Microchip

This will become your best friend if your pet becomes stressed in their new surroundings and manages to escape.

Do you have a non-microchipped pet? If you sign them up to our Medivet Healthcare Plan, they will be eligible to receive a free microchip! Contact your local Medivet practice today to find out more about the amazing benefits of our healthcare plan.

For their stay

It’s time to take down your pet’s suitcase and pack their bag! Here’s what you’ll need…

  • Flea and worming treatment
  • A collar, ID tag and a lead
  • Food and treats
  • Travelling water bowl
  • Feeding bowls
  • Jacket
  • Toys
  • A bed and a blanket
  • Towels
  • Pet carrier
  • Poo bags
  • First-aid kit
  • Brush
  • Documentation
  • Your vet’s contact details

Feel free to use this checklist to tick off items as and when you pack them. This will help you avoid last minute detours and will ensure you have everything you need for a fun and relaxed summer holiday with your pet.
