Symptom Checker

If you’re not sure whether your pet needs to see a vet, our quick and easy Symptom Checker can help. Answer a few simple questions about the signs of illness your pet is displaying and the checker will advise whether a trip to the vet is necessary and how urgently that specialist care should be given.

Meet some of the latest visitors to our practices

  • Grass seeds - a common problem for dogs

Ember and Ozzy have been recent visitors to Medivet Oakengates after both falling victim to grass seeds – a common problem for dogs during the summer months. Both dogs have made full recoveries after successful procedures to remove the sharp grass seeds. Visit our advice page on areas to avoid, how to check your pet and what to do if a grass seed injury is suspected.

  • Police dog with GDV

    Police dog with GDV

British Transport Police dog Tara, trained to save lives by searching for explosive devices, faced a threat to her own life recently after displaying signs of GDV - Gastric Dilation Volvulus – or dog bloat. The team at Medivet 24 Hour Alder performed corrective surgery and Tara has now made a full recovery . Signs of GDV include a swollen stomach and an urge to vomit but with nothing coming out.

  • Kitten vaccinations

These adorable kittens have recently been in to visit our practices for their all important vaccinations and health checks.

Vaccinations are an essential part of ongoing pet care and protect them from a number of serious illnesses.

  • dog with snake bite

    Snake bites in the UK

Although relatively rare they can cause nasty swelling & bleeding – as poor Duke found out. Thankfully the team at Medivet 24 Hour Southend were quick to administer anti-venom after Duke’s curiosity got the better of him & an Adder struck. We're pleased to confirm that Duke is now on the road to recovery.

  • Barney the sneezing dog

The curious case of the sneezing dog

Poor Barney’s acute attack of sneezes was the worst ever to be encountered by the team at Medivet Oakengates. His owners took him in for a closer examination (adhering to strict safeguarding measures) which revealed a tiny, barely visible 1cm mark on his upper lip. A simple procedure to stitch the wound means that Barney is now sneeze free.

  • Microchip Brings Stray Cat Lily Home

A Chafford Hundred vet is urging owners to microchip their pets after an Essex family was reunited with their cat, Lily, after six months of anguish.  Medivet Chafford Hundred Lead Vet Karine Field said: "Lily’s amazing story illustrates perfectly why we recommend having your pets microchipped."
